Verifying the site you think you are visiting

To identify the website you are looking at, you need to look in the address bar of your web browser. This is called the URL.

For the three most popular browsers (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome), our website address has been highlighted:

Internet Explorer:

Mozilla Firefox:

Google Chrome:

Notice for all three examples, only the is highlighted. Also modern browsers will reduce the visibility of the parts of the URL that are not the domain.

You can never accurately identify a website by looking at the logos or text in the website itself as those things can be copied from a real site to a scam site.

Figuring out ANY domain

To figure out the domain of the site you are visiting, look at the address bar. Find the first slash (highlighted blue) after http:// and read from right to left( ← ). Ignore ALL other slashes (these are highlighted in red). The first 2 segments are the domain (highlighted yellow). Notice the segments are separated by periods. The weather segment is not part of the domain

In this case the domain is Everything else around the is extra information needs to display the information you want.

Sometimes the scammers get tricky. Consider the following URL:

we need to first find the proper slash.
^ This is the slash we're looking for.

Now we go back 2 segments. The first segment is ru. The second segment is rx3trodup. Therefore the domain is It doesn't matter that you see in this URL - this link will not direct you to but instead to The is only in the URL to make you believe you would be going to Armed with this information you can prevent yourself from getting scammed.

Another example
^ This is the slash we're looking for.

The domain for this site is, and this site has nothing to do with CalTel as well.

Final example:
^ This is the slash we're looking for.

Going back 2 segments gives us the domain name of - definitely not a website that belongs to
