Answer

About AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

Skill level: Intermediate

Additional Information: Some people have trouble installing this software if they have Ad-Aware installed.  If you run into trouble installing this program, un-install Ad-Aware and try again.

By default AVG comes configured with some features that reduce performance of the whole computer, and add an extra level of complexity that can leave to problems.  When we install AVG, we also configure it to disable the following features:

  1. Email Scanner
  2. Toolbar
  3. Daily Scan

Email Scanner

Email Scanner is a feature that scans email as it comes into your email program.  For @caltel.com addresses this is unnecessary because all email is scanned by IronPort before it is delivered to your email address.  Additionally email based viruses are becoming exceedingly rare.  We disable this feature because it can sometimes cause problems with sending and receiving email.  This also does not work with the newer encrypted email protocols.

This item should be unchecked when doing an Advanced Installation of AVG Anti-Virus.

Toolbar

The AVG Security toolbar, like all browser toolbars, has been known to cause browser problems and instability.

This item should be unchecked when doing an Advanced Installation of AVG Anti-Virus.

Daily Scan

There is no need to scan your computer for viruses each and every day.  As long as AVG is kept up to date, it automatically scans everything as it is opened or saved.  Doing a daily scan will significantly slow down your computer when the scan is running.

This item should be unchecked when running the 'First Time Installation Wizard' after AVG Anti-Virus has been installed.

How to disable these features when installing AVG for the first time:
(This is the easiest, and will give you the best performance)
