Open Ports and Firewall Information
Answer
DSL Modem:
DSL Customers are all behind a firewall by default to help them be secure. If you need to open, or forward a port, you will need to call our tech support and have the firewall lifted. If your DSL modem is in router mode, ports will need to be forwarded, DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS ON YOUR OWN, we will help you forward the ports, or bridge the modem when you call in.
Router:
If you are using a router with your DSL modem then your computer(s) is behind another firewall. Almost every router comes with a firewall built inside to protect your computer(s). If you need to open ports or open the firewall you will need to call our tech support. Opening the ports on your router without bridging your modem will do you NO good.
Anti-Virus Program:
Some of the biggest named anti-virus programs on the market today may have some of the biggest problems you will face. Norton, McAfee and Panda are bundled with extra memory draining utilities that you really don't need enabled. One click of the mouse and you can completely firewall yourself off the internet. Check to make sure if you are experiencing problems with the internet that your anti-virus firewall is off.
Windows Firewall:
Windows XP has its own firewall built right in to your computer. Windows firewall usually never poses a problem and is easily disabled or enabled.
Firewall Software:
Zone Alarm or even packaged firewall's such as Norton or McAfee are designated firewalls in keeping your computer safe from harm. Keep in mind that a firewall not only keeps you safe from harm but can also block you completely off the internet or even block other programs on your computer that normally don't have a problem running. Remember to be firewall aware and be familiar with your software you have running on your computer.
